Online Keyword Search: "How to find my foundation color or shade". Well if you searched this and it brought you here; you've come to the right place. There's a bit of research involved when it comes to finding the right foundation. This research for the most part cost coins ok? The good thing is I've done the research before and I am going to share my tips with you.
When I came to love makeup and wanted to begin doing my own instead of forking out the dollars for a hired makeup artist to do it for me; I had to web search a ton. The problem with searching online even though there are tons of Youtube How To videos is how can you tell by looking at a person of similar shade that they are exactly your shade or not? Most of the uneducated non-makeup artists who love makeup actually do not have a good idea of their exact skin tone anyway when it comes to looking at a brand's foundation shade match chart. Some shade finder quizzes help but you still don’t know until you try the suggested shades out on yourself.
Along with that, how do we know what type of foundation we need? There's Dewy, Matte, etc. Then there's knowing the type of coverage we are looking to obtain. Do we want full coverage or do we want to look more natural? What is your undertone? Do you want to look cool or warm, etc.? Do you want to look brighter, darker, or do you want the color to be spot on? Then there are issues like tanning and hyperpigmentation. By the way, if you do not know what hyperpigmentation is to make it simple it's having one part of your body be a different color than the other. For example, the most common is your face being darker than your body or vice versa. If tanning or hyperpigmentation is an issue for you as it is for me, it's about knowing whether you want to match your face to your body or your body to your face. It's your choice.
To make a long story short, what you will need to do in the end is test out product. There's no way around it because sometimes depending on the brand, you may need two foundations to mix together to get your exact shade. This can be costly if you want to take the trial and error route and buy up a bunch of different colored foundations to try at home. There are stores like Sephora who allow you to buy product and return it if you don't like it for store credit and you can use that credit to try another color. You can also try brands that release new foundations. Most of the time they will send samples for free with purchase of another item because this is a good way for them to market the product. I've personally had Fenty Beauty and Morphe send me free foundation samples with a small purchase. Sometimes they will send a range of colors depending on your skin tone. Then there is always the drugstore makeup which is usually on sale and awesome quality in my opinion. Drugstore brands give a lot of luxury brands a run for their money.
Even less expensive ways to test product are options like the dollar store who also sell makeup. Usually their foundation choices are slim but you can still try out the product for a little of nothing. There are also free options like swatching makeup testers in-store at places like Sephora and Ulta. You could also ask a relative or friend who has makeup close to your skin tone to swatch their product so you can get an idea of what shades work for you.
The point is, there are options, so don't be discouraged. Be encouraged. You can and will find what works for you and do NOT let anyone tell you what that is. Let the experienced assist but only you know what's right for you. It's your face, your skin and you know what you want. Do what makes you feel beautiful. It's your choice. There is no right or wrong way. It's makeup. It's a journey. It's trial and error. It's live and learn. It's an experience and it's supposed to be fun. So get out there. Be brave, bold, courageous, and do not be afraid to make mistakes. Because guess what? You can literally dust (or wipe) it off and try again. Be fearless and enjoy finding your true match.
